Me: So, CPL Lim, i believe you have heard of the recent crimes happening in this neighbourhood?
CPL : Oh yes, outrageous. These vandals are really the scum of this Earth.
Me: Very inconsiderate, yes. So what is your take on these incidents?
CPL: Well. They had been able to continue creating troubles because we weren't ready. But now we are 100% confident we will be able stop all these soon.
Me: Really? How?
CPL: We'll need the residents in this neighbourhood to coorperate too, but as long as they follow these steps, the crime rate will definitely drop.
CPL: Let's take the vandals as example. If we want to have less vandal incident, these are the steps we have to follow.
1. Use good lighting in and around your business. This ensures that potential vandals are more visible and increases their chances of getting caught.
2. Use unbreakable fixtures or glass when possible. This reduces a person's opportunities to vandalize.
3. Lock any gates, garages and external doors around your business to prevent unauthorized access. Also lock up any equipment or tools that may be easy targets for vandals.
4. Clean up any signs of vandalism as soon as they appear. This may involve repairing broken or damaged signs or equipment.
5. If you see someone committing an act of vandalism, report it to the police.
Me: Oh i see, thank you very much, these steps will definitely help the residents a lot! I'll be sure to let them know of it through my blog!
CPL: Alright. I see you've created a crime prevention blog for your neighbourhood huh? Good thinking, wish you all the best!

A report of Jon Yen's witness on 20th October 2009, Friday.
The purpose of gaining everyone's awareness is so that everyone can be on the lookout for each other and report suspicious characters in the neighbourhood if there is any.
For all the readers, I have decided to put up tips on prevention about vandalism, provided by Pete, a police from our very own neighbourhood. What you will need is security cameras and flood lights.
Now, follow these 5 simple steps:
Step 1: Install the motion sensor flood lights. (To illuminate areas vandals usually approach)
Step 2: Notify your neighbours. (Raise awareness)
Step 3: Notify your local police department and file a report for any vandalism that occurs. Do not be afraid to speak up!
Step 4: Install the security cameras for surveillance in areas that have been targeted by vandals.
Step 5: Limit access to these properties as far as possible. Keep access lock and available only to resisdent.
With these steps, vandals will indubitably be deterred and less daring to conduct such crimes now.
Here is another issue Jon brought up with. Are those crime prevention posters we see everywhere useful at all?
I have evaluated the effectiveness of the posters, and it does not seem to be affecting the thinking of the youths nowadays. Most pass by it without paying much attention to it. The slogan "Low crime doesn't mean No crime, Be Alert/Vigilant!" hardly imposes its meaning onto people. In my opinion, the reason of this series of posters are ineffective is mainly because it does not leave a deep impression onto people, nor motivating people who reads it to make a change and be alert or vigilant. This is where the NCPC has to improve on, and create a poster with bigger impact.
This shall be all for today, keep coming back to this blog for more updates which will be posted regularly. Till then, bear in mind the tips that were provided above and stay on guard against these criminals!
The crime prevention poster, is it effective?
